9TH ANNUAL MEETING OF THE SOUTHEASTERN BAT DIVERSITY NETWORK (SBDN) AND 14TH COLLOQUIUM ON CONSERVATION OF MAMMALS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN U.S.

February 12-13, 2004 - Unicoi State Park near Helen, Georgia

Hosted by the University of Georgia, Unicoi State Park near Helen, Georgia was the location of the 9th Annual Meeting of the Southeastern Bat Diversity Network and 14th Colloquium on Conservation of Mammals in the Southeastern United States



Meeting hosts Steven Castleberry and Mike Mengak

Steven Castleberry (right) and Mike Mengak (left) of the Warnell School of Forest Resources at the University of Georgia were the local hosts for these annual events.


There were about 120 professionals and students in attendance. Topics at Thursday's SBDN meeting included discussions of past and upcoming bat blitzes across the Southeast, bat mortality from wild turbines, and rabies considerations for bat researchers. Friday's Mammal Colloquium consisted of 30 oral and 10 poster presentations on a variety of topics relating to mammal ecology and conservation.

Jason Jennings receives Best Student Award

The best student presentation award was given to Jason Jennings of the University of Memphis for his presentation entitled Predation on Artificial Nests of Northern Bobwhites by Mammalian Mesopredators at Varying Distances from Habitat Edge. Jason received a plaque and a $100 cash prize.


At the conclusion, John Nelson of Bethel College invited everyone to the 2005 meetings to be held February 17th and 18th at Paris Landing State Park in Paris Landing, Tennessee.
